Churches of Montalto Uffugo

On this page is a list of churches in Montalto Uffugo. Some are active churches and some are historic churches that no longer have a congregation. I will begin by providing some history of a few churches in the comune.

Madonna della Serra

Madonna Della Sera

Madonna Della Serra and its beautiful baroque architecture are the pride of Montalto Uffugo. It is the mother church of Montalto. Originally built in 1227, it was reconstructed the first time in the 1500's. Madonna Della Serra has been spared destruction from many earthquakes. The Madonna of this church is the town's Patron Saint whose statue was replaced in 1751. In English Madonna Della Serra means Madonna of The Greenhouse, named that because the church was built on a former location of a greenhouse. Legends state that the statue miraculously appeared one day in front of the greenhouse. The owner of the greenhouse picked up the beautiful statue and put it in his barn. The next day the statue appeared again in the exact spot. The greenhouse owner thought someone was playing a trick on him so this time he locked the barn after he placed the statue there. The next day when the statue appeared again, it was seen as a miracle and a sign that the Madonna wanted a church built there. During the series of earthquakes in 1788 the church caught fire and all the record books of baptisms, marriages, deaths and more were destroyed. Most of the church fascade remained intact, although damaged. Currently the church has records dating back to 1788 after the date of the fire. The church has been restored many times since then. The nassive staircare in front of the church has been the site of many festivals and musical and theatrical perfornances throughout the years.

L'Annunziata/Santa Maria della Neve

The church L'Annunziata was located in the frasione of Santa Maria La Castagna in Montalto. It is unknown when L'Annunzita was built, however, it was destroyed by a fire around the early 1820s. A new church was built at the same location and dedicated in 1823 and named Santa Maria della Neve. Many church records survived the fire and can be viewed on my other website Cosenza Exchange. Original photographic images of baptism records from 1746-1932 can be viewed there along with marriages from 1913-1939 and deaths from 1913-1929. This church remains active today.
